Some months ago, I was successful at convincing a friend to let me redefine his wardrobe. I took particular interest in his appearance because of his recent career path. You see, he is a consultant and entrepreneur on the rise; meeting new clients who have no previous knowledge of him. First impression counts, and you have to look serious (or at least tidy) to be taken seriously.
Is your appearance saying the right thing about you to create the credible first impression?
As an image consultant, it’s really essential to put your client’s personality and preference (to a certain level) into consideration in order to ensure they feel comfortable in their new wardrobe and appear confident. The collection I went with is made up of items that are interchangeable and can easily make up a different-looking outfit even with the same pieces, maximizing the return on investment. I achieved this with simple and basic pieces; therefore, I can say my client’s unique taste translated into the Minimalists Collection.
The white shirt is known to be very versatile, and it was my first choice. My pick is a bit unique, featuring a curved collar in black, black buttons and the one button cuffs. This made it a less traditional white shirt, and made the transition to formal wear easier for the consultant. I also selected another classic timeless menswear–the white collar office shirt in sky blue. Blue is safe and subtle, plus, when working with a budget, a (shirt + tie) package seemed very attractive. Knowing my client’s love for blue, I decided to pick out 2 blue shirts.
Finally, in the shirt category is the Grey Black Curved Collar Shirt. All are minimal tones as you’d expect. (Not revealing pictures of all the pieces)
The Tees and Polos
These pieces allow the client to achieve an effortless, laid-back look for his endless weekend meetings. There are a couple of t-shirts, polos and sweaters to be paired with jeans or tailored trousers, tucked in or out of the trousers. The basic tees are very affordable and having a variety of them will help develop an effective backbone for your wardrobe. They are safe pieces, very comfortable and can be dressed up when paired with a blazer. A white t-shirt is my favourite. White is very easy to work with and offsets whatever it is paired with, bringing more attention to the contrast in colours and readily produces a fresh aura.
The collection includes 3 tailored trousers and a pair of jeans, all in the Slim Fits cut. The slim fit trousers are very flattering and give a sharper outlook. This part can be tricky and trying out a number of trousers can help you decide the perfect fit. With that in mind, how close must the hemline hang over the shoes? What cut of trousers will you usually go for? Slim fit or regular?
I picked out two shoes for my client, and versatility was my key word. My desired choice was a pair that could easily transition from formal to informal, a pair you could dress down and dress up. First is the the obvious choice: black lace up shoes with a little bit of its soles in white for a casual edge. The other pair is brown moccasins with bow detailing. I picked this because they are a classic, are lace free unlike the black pair and can be combined with literally everything and worn for most occasions.
P.S. Once my client is comfortable with the basics, we’ll be making an upgrade to the next level…Wait for it!
Hopefully, he might consider taking as much personal risks as he does in business, and experiment with pieces and even colours, while keeping an open mind and discovering his unique sense of style. I am also pleased to add that my client loved this collection and said the following about it:
I feel more confident and I am better able to execute. People also take me more seriously
